What to Wear to Your Photo Session: A Style Guide for Every Type of Shoot


One of the most common questions I get asked before a session is: “What should we wear?”

And I completely get it—choosing the right outfit can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be! The right clothing not only makes you feel confident and comfortable but also elevates your final images. Whether you're planning a romantic engagement session, a cozy family shoot, or personal portraits, I’ve put together this helpful guide to make styling your session stress-free and fun.

General Style Tips for Any Session


Before we dive into specific session types, here are some universal tips to keep in mind:


  • Coordinate, don’t match. Aim for complementary colors and tones rather than identical outfits.
  • Stick to neutrals and earth tones. Soft colors like beige, cream, olive, rust, gray, or muted blues photograph beautifully and don't distract from your faces or the scenery.
  • Avoid logos and loud patterns. They tend to date photos and draw focus away from you.
  • Layers and textures add dimension. Think denim, knits, lace, or linen—these textures can create visual interest without overwhelming the frame.
  • Comfort is key. If you feel good, you'll look good. Make sure your clothing fits well and allows you to move freely.
  • Have options. I’m always happy to help you choose the best outfit once we’re on location.

Couples Sessions



For couples, the goal is to highlight your connection, not compete with it. Choose outfits that complement each other and reflect your shared vibe.


TIP: Think about what you would wear for a stylish and relaxed date!

For Her:

  • Flowy maxi dresses or skirts for movement
  • Cozy sweaters or cardigans paired with jeans or trousers
  • Neutral boots or sandals depending on the season


For Him:

  • Fitted button-down shirts, Henley tees, or simple knits
  • Chinos or jeans in neutral shades
  • Layers like a light jacket or flannel add warmth and style

Family Sessions


With families, harmony and comfort are everything. Choose a palette of 3–4 coordinating colors and build each family member’s outfit from that palette.


TIP:  Lay all outfits out together a few days before the shoot to see how they look side-by-side.

Recommended Outfit Formula:

  • One person in a pattern (subtle florals, checks, or stripes)
  • Others in solid colors that match tones within that pattern
  • Mix up textures to keep things interesting
  • Match parent's color with each kid (example: mom w/ daughter)


Kids:

  • Avoid neon colors or shirts with characters/logos
  • Layers like vests, tights, and little cardigans look adorable and practical

 

Engagement Session


This is such an exciting time and deserves outfits that feel a bit elevated, without being stiff. Consider bringing one casual and one more polished look.


TIP: Coordinate with your wedding theme or colors if you have them—these photos can be used for Save the Dates!

Casual Look:

  • Think soft knits, simple dresses, jeans with a nice top
  • Works great for outdoor, golden hour locations


Dressier Look:

  • A long dress or fitted midi for her, dress shirt or jacket for him
  • Darker tones like navy, burgundy, forest green
  • Lighter tones like white, tan, pastel colors

Individual Portraits


This is your chance to shine and express you. Your outfit should reflect your personality while aligning with the mood or purpose of your session.


TIP: Think about how you want your audience or friends to perceive you. Confident? Friendly? Creative? Choose colors and cuts that reflect that.

Senior Portraits:

  • 1-2 outfits:  one semi-formal and one fun/personal
  • Add accessories like hats, jewelry, or layers to change up looks quickly


Branding or Lifestyle Portraits:

  • Stick to your brand’s color scheme
  • Choose pieces that align with your professional identity (blazers, dresses, clean denim, etc.)
  • Avoid overly trendy pieces unless they’re core to your brand style


"Just Because" Portraits:

  • Stick to your personal style
  • Pick colors that flatter your skin tone and eyes—soft earth tones, jewel tones, or muted pastels tend to photograph beautifully.
  • Add layers and accessories (like a favorite jacket, scarf, or bold earrings) to bring visual interest and versatility.
  • If you love your curves, your tattoos, your wild hair—show them off. This is about celebrating you.
